The Security Service of Ukraine, together with the Main Intelligence Directorate, announced the prevention of a terrorist attack, which, according to the Ukrainian side, was prepared by the Russian FSB against one of the leaders of the Russian opposition movement. The name of the alleged target is not disclosed by the SBU. At the same time, Ukrainian Telegram channels report a shootout between SBU and military intelligence in Kyiv, but there is no official confirmation of this information.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced on September 2 that it, together with the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (HUR), prevented an alleged terrorist attack against a Russian opposition figure.
According to the SBU, the assassination was organized by the Federal Security Service of Russia.
In the statement from the Ukrainian security service, the alleged target is referred to as "one of the leaders of the Russian opposition political national movement." It is noted that this person arrived in Ukraine to participate in events dedicated to the country's Independence Day.
The SBU does not provide any further information about the identity of the person against whom the assassination was being prepared.
Media mention two names
The independent Russian publication SOTAvision pointed out that recently among the well-known representatives of the Russian opposition in Ukraine were the leader of the rock band "Nogu Svelo!" Maxim Pokrovsky and lawyer Mark Feygin.
However, there is no official information that either Pokrovsky or Feygin were the targets of the alleged assassination.
The SBU also does not disclose details of the operation and the circumstances under which the alleged terrorist attack was prevented.
Reports of a shootout in Kyiv
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Telegram channels "Kyiv Movement" and "Trukha" reported a shootout in Kyiv, which allegedly occurred between SBU and HUR employees.
Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have not yet commented on this information. Therefore, the circumstances of the alleged incident and the fact of the shootout have not been officially confirmed.
According to the version circulated by the Telegram channels, the incident may be related to the disappearance of Stepan Kaplunov, the deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK) fighting on the side of Ukraine.
RDK previously reported Kaplunov's disappearance
The day before, the Russian Volunteer Corps reported that a few days ago, unknown individuals allegedly "kidnapped" Stepan Kaplunov in the yard of his house.
In the same message, the RDK simultaneously used the wording that the formation member was "detained."
Who exactly could have detained Kaplunov, where he is now, and whether his disappearance is related to reports of events in Kyiv has not been officially disclosed.
Thus, at the moment, the Ukrainian side officially states only about the prevention of the alleged terrorist attack, for which the SBU holds the FSB of Russia responsible. The name of the possible target is not disclosed. Reports of a shootout between SBU and HUR employees and its possible connection to the disappearance of an RDK representative remain unconfirmed information from Telegram channels.
