In Germany, a series of alarming incidents occurred in the last 24 hours at facilities and near critical infrastructure. After two suspicious incidents at high-voltage substations on the morning of September 2, an explosion occurred near the main train station in Augsburg. Two young people were injured, the station had to be completely closed, and train services were halted. Later, the police lifted the alert and restored services.
The explosion in Augsburg occurred around 3:15 AM on Wednesday, September 2, in the area of Bahnhofstraße, opposite the main train station.
According to the police, an unknown object exploded in the passage between the buildings. As a result, window panes were damaged.
Two people were injured — a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man. They sustained minor acoustic injuries. According to German media, both victims are citizens of Ukraine.
Numerous police officers and specialists from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office arrived at the scene.
What exactly exploded has not yet been officially determined. German media reported that it might have been a hand grenade, but the police did not confirm this version.
According to some reports, the explosion occurred near a jewelry store. Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident and the possible motive.
The train station was completely closed
The situation worsened after another suspicious object was found directly on the premises of the main train station.
For safety reasons, the train station was completely closed, passengers were evacuated, and train services were temporarily halted.
Specialists examined the find. It was later determined that the suspicious object posed no danger.
After that, the police lifted the alert. Around 10 AM, the main train station in Augsburg was reopened, and train services resumed.
Thus, reports of the suspension of train services only pertain to the period of the police operation on the morning of September 2. The train station is currently operational again.
Several alarming incidents in one day
The explosion in Augsburg occurred against the backdrop of other serious incidents in Germany.
On September 1, unknown individuals attempted to cause short circuits at a high-voltage substation near the lignite power plant in Jänschwalde, Brandenburg. Homemade devices were found at the site, at least one of which detonated.
On the same day, another serious incident occurred at the Amprion operator's substation in Bergheim in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
After equipment malfunctions occurred there, the police stated that they no longer consider a regular technical failure as the main version.
"We are not assuming a technical defect, but rather a deliberate action," law enforcement stated.
The consequences were significant: the problems affected five power units of the Niederaußem and Neurath power plants. Generating capacities totaling about 4200 megawatts were temporarily taken offline.
However, there was no disruption to the electricity supply for the population.
Thus, Germany faced several serious incidents in less than a day: suspected deliberate actions at two high-voltage facilities and an explosion near one of the major train stations. However, there is currently no basis to speak of a unified series of attacks. The investigation will need to determine what exactly exploded in Augsburg and whether there is any connection between these events.
