Lithuania's Intelligence Claims Possible Preparation by Russia for Attacks on Baltic States' Infrastructure 0 157

The military intelligence of Lithuania has warned about the possible preparation by Russia for attacks on critical infrastructure in the Baltic states. This was reported by the 15min portal, and the information was confirmed by Lithuania's Minister of Defense, Robertas Kausas.

According to the minister, the Russian side is considering the possibility of so-called unconventional kinetic attacks in the Baltic region. It is assumed that Ukrainian-made drones may be used for this purpose.

The details of possible operations, including the intended targets and timelines, are not disclosed by Lithuanian authorities. At the same time, in their assessment, Russia may use captured Ukrainian drones to complicate the establishment of the true source of the attack and subsequently deny its involvement.

This is important, as such a scenario could complicate the operational clarification of the circumstances of the incident and increase the risk of information provocations.

In recent years, drones have repeatedly entered the airspace of NATO countries. Initially, authorities explained such cases by stating that Ukrainian devices might have deviated from their course due to the impact of Russian electronic warfare systems. However, it is now noted that among officials, the opinion is growing that some of these incidents may have been organized intentionally.

According to the Lithuanian side, potential targets could include Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, and Finland.

Leaders of NATO's eastern flank countries have previously publicly warned about possible provocations. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda stated that transportation and energy infrastructure facilities could be at risk.

Against this backdrop, security measures in Lithuania have already been strengthened. Since mid-June, military personnel have been assisting in guarding the liquefied natural gas terminal in Klaipėda, the LitPol Link energy connection, a transformer substation in the Alytus region, and the Kruonis Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant. The heightened security regime has been extended at least until August 19.

Lithuanian authorities associate the risk of such provocations with Moscow's attempts to increase pressure amid the war in Ukraine. The Kremlin, for its part, rejects accusations of preparing attacks. Earlier, the Russian side also claimed that the Baltic states allegedly provide Ukraine with their airspace for strikes against Russia, but Vilnius has repeatedly denied these allegations.
