Extreme heat continues to engulf Central Europe. On Wednesday, two countries—Slovakia and Austria—updated their national temperature records: the air warmed above 41 degrees.
Slovakia and Austria set new absolute temperature records on Wednesday. In both countries, thermometers rose above the 41 degrees Celsius mark for the first time.
According to the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute, the temperature in the village of Kameničná nad Hronom reached 41.4 degrees. This is the highest figure in the history of meteorological observations in the country.
Notably, the previous national record of 41.3 degrees was set in the same locality just over a month ago, on June 30. This indicates that this summer has already rewritten Slovakia's climate statistics twice.
In neighboring Austria, the absolute maximum temperature was also updated. According to the national meteorological service GeoSphere Austria, in the village of Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in the federal state of Lower Austria, the air warmed up to 41.2 degrees.
Just a day earlier, the heat record in Austria was 41.0 degrees and was recorded in Vienna. Thus, the historical maximum lasted only one day before being surpassed again.
Such temperature values mean increased pressure on healthcare systems, energy supply, and infrastructure, and residents are urged to take precautions during the extreme heat.
A new wave of extremely high temperatures continues to break climate records in Central European countries, demonstrating how quickly weather conditions are changing this summer.
