The Kaliningrad Regional Court has sentenced a citizen of Lithuania, who was accused of espionage by Russian authorities. The man received 13 years and six months in prison, the court's press service reported.

According to the Kaliningrad region's prosecutor's office, from 2011 to 2024, he allegedly collected and transmitted information constituting a state secret to a foreign state while on the territory of Russia.

In determining the sentence, the court took into account the health condition of the accused. The statement notes that he suffers from severe chronic illnesses.

The convicted man is 48 years old. According to the prosecutor's office, he resided in the Guryevsky district of the Kaliningrad region.

Russian courts regularly hear cases on charges of treason and espionage; however, such proceedings typically take place behind closed doors. Therefore, details of the charges are usually not disclosed.

The online publication "Mediazona" reports that the individual in question is Alexander Polyachkov. According to the publication, he was placed in a pre-trial detention center in the summer of 2024 on espionage charges.

As noted by "Mediazona", Polyachkov was born in Klaipeda and later moved to the Kaliningrad region. Since 2014, he had headed the company "Amberus", which specialized in the processing of precious stones and the production of jewelry.

Since materials from such criminal cases are not published, independent verification of the circumstances underlying the charges is impossible.

The sentence has become another high-profile decision in a case of espionage in Russia; however, there has been no information regarding a possible appeal so far.
