U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the agreement between Washington and Tehran is no longer in effect. He made this statement on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, commenting on the recent escalation of the conflict between the two countries.
In response to a question from reporters about the prospects of agreements with Iran, Trump said:
"They are the dregs of society. Do you know what the dregs are? They are the dregs of society. They are sick people. They are led by sick people," Trump stated.
Trump said he would allow his negotiators to "continue negotiations if they want to," but added that the U.S. is wasting time talking to Iran and expressed a desire to "focus on its own business" instead of trying to engage in diplomacy, CNN reports.
On Tuesday night, U.S. armed forces launched a series of strikes on targets in Iran. According to the American side, more than 80 targets were hit, including air defense systems, command posts, and dozens of boats belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Washington stated that the operation was a response to three recent attacks by Iran on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
In the morning, Iran retaliated by striking American military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.
Just a month ago, the U.S. and Iran signed a declaration of intent that was supposed to serve as the basis for a future peace agreement. One of its key provisions was a ceasefire.
However, the ceasefire regime has been repeatedly violated, and negotiations for a final agreement have made virtually no progress in recent weeks.
Donald Trump's statement indicates that the diplomatic process between the U.S. and Iran has effectively been derailed. Against the backdrop of mutual military strikes, the prospects for resuming negotiations appear extremely uncertain, and tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.
