Lightning Struck the Wing of a Plane During a Flight to Mexico — Passengers Captured the Scary Moment on Video 0 10

A passenger on a flight with the Mexican airline Viva posted a video of the terrifying moment when lightning struck one of the wings of the plane during the flight.

The footage shows a bright flash racing along the left wing of the aircraft. Immediately after that, the frame was flooded with a blinding burst of light.

When the glow disappeared, it was noticeable that part of the wing continued to glow, and a significant trail of smoke remained behind.

A few seconds later, frightened gasps and moans from passengers who witnessed the incident could be heard in the cabin.

It is known that the lightning struck the plane during a flight from Puerto Escondido International Airport to Felipe Ángeles International Airport in Mexico City.

Viva Airlines confirmed the incident. In a comment to local media, the carrier stated, "The lightning strike did indeed occur."

The company also emphasized that the situation posed no threat to passengers or crew. "The plane was never, not for a moment, in danger. It reached its destination without any problems," the airline representatives reported.

According to Need To Know, the incident occurred in the early weeks of the rainy season in the Mexican state of Oaxaca.

The coastal area where Puerto Escondido is located is considered one of the regions in Mexico with high thunderstorm activity during this time of year.

Experts also warn that this year's thunderstorm season may be more active than usual, attributing this to the increased water temperature in the Pacific Ocean.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) notes that commercial airplanes are struck by lightning on average about once a year.

Most of these incidents do not result in serious damage to the aircraft and pose no danger to passengers.

One internet user, commenting on the video, wrote: "Basically, nothing happens, but it’s still shocking and frightening during the flight."

Despite the dramatic and frightening effect of such footage, modern passenger airplanes are designed with potential lightning strikes in mind. Nevertheless, for passengers, such moments remain some of the most stressful situations during a flight.
