The President of the Czech Republic Petr Pavel urged NATO to "show teeth" to Russia due to ongoing provocations on the eastern flank of the Alliance and warned that a weak response could push Moscow to go even further.

A former general and ex-chairman of NATO's Military Committee stated to the British publication The Guardian that the Alliance should consider "sufficiently decisive, possibly even asymmetric" measures.

Among them are disconnecting Russian banks from the global financial system, restricting access to the internet or satellite communications, and destroying aircraft that violate NATO airspace.

According to Pavel, Moscow has understood how to test NATO's borders without crossing the threshold of Article 5. This article states that an attack on one NATO member is considered an attack on the entire Alliance.

The President of the Czech Republic also noted that Russian military leaders sometimes even laugh at the slow decision-making in NATO.

"When I asked them why they engage in such provocative actions in the air, dangerously approaching or flying over military ships in the Black or Baltic Seas, they replied: 'Because we can.' This is the kind of behavior we have allowed," he said.

Pavel expressed disappointment at what he called "a lack of resolve on the part of the United States to continue pressure on Russia," but avoided direct criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump. However, he previously stated to Czech media that "Trump has caused more damage to NATO's credibility in the last few weeks than Vladimir Putin has managed to do in many years."

He also called for considering "asymmetric" responses that "do not kill people but are sensitive enough for Russia to understand that such behavior is unacceptable."

"For example, disconnecting the internet or satellites — you have seen the impact Starlink has had on the battlefield — or disconnecting Russian banks from the financial system," the President of the Czech Republic listed.

These comments came after a NATO fighter jet shot down a drone over Estonia this week, and several days of declared air alerts due to a possible drone invasion disrupted life for people in Latvia and Lithuania. It is believed that most of them were Ukrainian drones redirected to NATO territory by Russian electronic warfare assets.
