The number of immigrants in the EU reached a record last year

The number of immigrants in the European Union rose to a record level of 64.2 million in 2025, which is approximately 2.1 million more than the previous year, according to a study by the Center for Migration Studies and Analysis of the Rockwool Foundation in Berlin, LETA reports citing TVP.

In 2010, the number of immigrants was 40 million, according to a report citing data from Eurostat and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Germany still has the highest number of people born abroad, nearly 18 million, of which 72% are of working age. At the same time, Spain has recently seen the fastest growth — approximately 700,000 people, resulting in the number of foreign-born reaching 9.5 million.

"Germany remains the main destination for migrants in Europe both in absolute terms and relative to its population size," noted one of the report's authors, Tommaso Frattini.

The study states that migration patterns across the EU are heterogeneous — in Luxembourg, Malta, and Cyprus, the share of immigrants is higher relative to the population.

Asylum requests have also been concentrated in a few countries: nearly three-quarters of all applications were submitted in Spain, Italy, France, and Germany.

Overall, Germany has accepted the largest number of refugees — 2.7 million.
