European countries have intensified preparations for a backup scenario in case of a reduction in U.S. presence or their complete withdrawal from the alliance. This was prompted by both the harsh statements of Donald Trump and the overall increase in doubts about Washington's reliability as a security guarantor.
In the program "Kārtības rullis," Deputy Chief of Staff of the NATO multinational division Aivis Mirbahs recounted that back in 2020, while studying in the United States, he clearly heard signals that America wanted to distance itself from Europe.
"The Americans told me directly that they were tired of babysitting us. They were tired of babysitting a 40-year-old son," noted Mirbahs.
"How much longer are we going to support you?" the Americans rhetorically asked.
"We want to get rid of you. We are interested in China. Deal with Russia yourselves," recalls the words of the Americans, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the NATO multinational division.
