A Russian military plane crashed in the annexed Ukrainian Crimea on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of 29 people, LETA reports, citing AFP and the Russian news agency TASS, which quotes the Ministry of Defense of Russia.
"On March 31 at around 18:00 Moscow time (18:00 Latvian time), contact was lost with the military transport aircraft An-26 while it was on a scheduled flight over the Crimean Peninsula," the Ministry of Defense stated. The plane crashed into a rock.
"The search and rescue unit has established the crash site of the An-26 aircraft. According to information from the scene, six crew members and 23 passengers were killed," the ministry's statement said.
During the inspection of the aircraft wreckage, no signs of external impact were found, and it is currently assumed that a technical malfunction may have caused the disaster.
