Poland Extends Border Control at the Border with Germany

Border control at Poland's borders with Germany and Lithuania has been extended from April 5 to October 1. "The decision is due to the necessity to counter illegal migration," the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized.

Poland is extending border control at its borders with Germany and Lithuania from April 5 to October 1. This was reported on Saturday, March 28, by the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration on the social network X, as noted by DW.

"This decision is due to the necessity to counter illegal migration and ensure internal security," the ministry emphasized.

Order is maintained by the officers of the Border Guard of Poland, the Polish police, and soldiers of the territorial defense forces.

Tusk: Stationary Border Control is a Response to Germany's Actions

Warsaw introduced stationary border control at the border with Germany on July 7, 2025. Similar measures were also taken at the border with Lithuania.

Those crossing the border have their passports and identity documents checked. Polish border guards pay special attention to buses, minibuses, and cars with a large number of passengers, as well as vehicles with tinted windows. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk noted that these measures are intended to help "limit the uncontrolled flow" of illegal migrants.

Tusk has repeatedly indicated that Warsaw made this decision in response to actions taken by Berlin. In early May 2025, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt ordered to strengthen border control and deny asylum seekers at the Polish border. His predecessor, Nancy Faeser, implemented stationary control at the border with Poland in October 2023.
