The war must be stopped before the entire region is engulfed in flames - Erdogan

The war currently taking place in significant parts of the Middle East must be stopped before it engulfs the entire region and leads to even greater costs for the global economy, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated on Wednesday, LETA reports citing AFP.

“This war must be stopped before it becomes even larger in scale and completely engulfs the entire region in flames,” Erdogan said, noting that the Middle East “is once again filled with the smell of blood and gunpowder.”

“If diplomacy is given a chance, it is quite possible,” Erdogan added.

“If this senseless and illegal war continues, there will be even more human casualties and material losses, and the costs to the global economy will increase even further,” Erdogan warned, emphasizing that Turkey is trying to find a diplomatic solution.

The day before, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran has “a very bitter experience of negotiations with the Americans.”

Israel and the U.S. began strikes against Iran on February 28 — two days after another round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran on Tehran's nuclear program concluded in Geneva.

As a result of the strikes and raids by Israel and the U.S., many cities in Iran, including the capital Tehran, were affected.

Iran retaliated with strikes against Israel and the Gulf countries where American military facilities are located.

The conflict between the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah and Israel has resumed with new intensity.

In Turkey's airspace, NATO's air defense systems intercepted two ballistic missiles during the five days of war with Iran.
