Lithuania should consider the possibility of military support for allies in the fight against Iran, but it is too early to talk about it as no requests for assistance have been received, said the president's chief advisor on national security, Deividas Matulionis.

"So far, no one has asked for this assistance, but if such a hypothetical situation arose, I think we would have to consider it. But today, talking about something that doesn't really exist seems too early to me," said Matulionis on Sunday in the LRT program 'Week'.

"This question should actually be addressed to the commander-in-chief of the army. (...) If proposals are presented, then politicians will decide," he added, responding to a question about how exactly Lithuania could contribute.

Matulionis emphasized that discussions about possible military support from Lithuania are a "bit premature" to demonstrate the country's solidarity with its partners.

"The threat from Iran exists not only for Israel but also for Europe, so we must stand with the United States and Israel in this particular war," noted the president's advisor.

He also pointed out that Russia is seeking to lift sanctions "at any cost," but this is not being discussed.

"So far, we have no bad signs that sanctions will be lifted. On the contrary, sanctions are being tightened, and (there is — BNS) the 20th package of sanctions, so they are starting to take effect," Matulionis told the national broadcaster.

WEST'S CAPACITY TO SUPPORT UKRAINE MAY DECREASE

The president's advisor also acknowledged that rising oil and gas prices, driven by military actions in the Middle East, if they continue, benefit Russia, but this can be offset by stricter sanctions.
