The war with Iran could continue for a long time or be completed within a few days, U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Saturday to the American online publication "Axios," LETA reported, citing Al Jazeera.
"I can continue for a long time and take control of the whole situation or finish it in two or three days and tell the Iranians: 'See you again in a few years if you start rebuilding [the nuclear and missile programs],'" Trump said in a phone interview from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
"In any case, it will take them several years to recover from this attack," the U.S. president stated.
It remains unclear what conditions Trump is proposing for a quick end to the war, although his statements seemingly indicate a certain possibility of diplomacy.
Trump reported that he decided to start strikes despite negotiations over Iran's nuclear program for two reasons, one of which is that "the Iranians were coming close and then backing off, coming close and then backing off," which he believes indicates that they "really don’t want to make a deal."
Trump also stated that he instructed his team to gather information on all attacks related to Iran over the past 25 years.
"I saw that every month they were doing something bad, blowing something up or killing someone," Trump said.
It was reported that on Saturday, Israel and the U.S. struck Iran, resulting in missile attacks affecting both the capital Tehran and other cities.
Iran retaliated with strikes against Israel as well as U.S. military facilities in Bahrain and other countries in the Persian Gulf.
As a result of the strikes by Israel and the U.S. on Iran on Saturday, 201 people were killed, and 747 were injured, the Iranian Red Crescent reported on Saturday evening.
