A shootout off the coast of Cuba on Wednesday resulted in the Cuban Coast Guard shooting four and injuring six people on a speedboat registered in the U.S. state of Florida, the Cuban Ministry of the Interior reported, according to LETA citing AFP.
The incident occurred amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and communist-led Cuba, located 160 kilometers from Florida.
Cuba initially did not disclose the nationality of the passengers on the American speedboat. U.S. officials have not yet commented on the incident.
The Cuban Ministry of the Interior reported that the coast guard discovered an "illegal" speedboat registered in Florida one nautical mile from the town of Falconesca in Villa Clara province.
When the coast guard vessel approached, shots were fired from the American speedboat, resulting in the injury of the commander of the Cuban vessel.
"As a result of this confrontation (...) four aggressors were killed, and six others were injured," the Ministry of the Interior stated, adding that the injured were evacuated and received medical assistance.
The Cuban government frequently reports on incursions of speedboats from the U.S. into its territorial waters. These incidents are often linked to human or drug smuggling.
Later, Cuba stated that during this shootout, it thwarted an attempt by armed men to enter its territory from the U.S.
In a statement, the Ministry of the Interior said that the detainees reported that they "intended to carry out an incursion with terrorist aims."
The ministry reported that assault rifles, handguns, Molotov cocktails, and other military equipment were found on the speedboat. All ten attackers were Cubans living in the U.S.
