The Kaunas District Court will begin hearing a criminal case in April in which a Russian citizen is accused of attempting to smuggle a mammoth tusk from Lithuania to Switzerland, LETA reports, citing ELTA.
The first hearing in this case is scheduled for April 23.
According to the data from the pre-trial investigation, a Russian citizen identified as N. I. used delivery services on April 10, 2025, to send a package from Lithuania to Switzerland.
The man provided false information to the customs declaration service.
He claimed that he was sending "petrified wood" worth 3,250 euros and attached fake documents allegedly confirming this.
Law enforcement agencies established that the actual contents of the shipment did not match the description and that a mammoth tusk was actually being sent.
Since the customs authorities were presented with an export declaration containing false information, it was deemed that the goods were not declared with the intent to mislead the authorities and evade customs control in order to illegally transport the mammoth tusk from Lithuania to Switzerland.
During customs control at Kaunas Airport, the shipment was inspected and confiscated. It was determined that the value of the mammoth tusk, including taxes, was 16,728 euros.
