Political scientist: Millions of Germans have felt the "breath of war" for the first time since the end of World War II.

The war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine has significantly changed Germany, experts surveyed by DW believe. According to political scientist Alex Yusupov, the war has become a "mental shock" for the Germans. "Skepticism towards military power, preference for diplomatic tools, hope in institutions - all of this proved to be untenable on February 24, 2022," says Yusupov. In his observation, due to the war in Ukraine, what has changed the most for Germans is the "feeling of a clear future."

Political scientist Dmitry Stratievsky, in an interview with Deutsche Welle, highlights three main changes. First, millions of Germans have felt the "breath of war" for the first time since the end of World War II. Second, there has been a change in the perception of security and defense spending. And third, Germans have started to view their own army differently, which was previously not very popular.

According to analyst Stefan Meister from the German Council on Foreign Relations, the main change since the beginning of the full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine has been the "realization that Germany lives in a different reality in terms of security policy and that Russia is the biggest problem and the most serious threat to Germany and Europe."
