Politico: Iceland Wants to Resume EU Membership as Soon as Possible After Trump's 'Threats'.

Iceland may hold a referendum on resuming its application to join the European Union (EU) as early as 2027. This was reported by Politico.

The country's parliament may announce the date for the nationwide vote in the coming weeks. "On paper, it wouldn’t be that difficult; it might even take just a year," a senior European official told the publication on condition of anonymity.

If Icelanders approve euro-integration in the referendum, the Northern European nation could join the EU faster than many other candidates. However, there remain contentious issues between Brussels and Reykjavik — in particular, fishing rights, which play a significant role in the Icelandic economy.

Iceland had previously applied for EU membership in 2009 following the international economic crisis. However, in 2015, the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced its withdrawal.

Earlier, Iceland was one of many countries that made it onto the list of "targets" of U.S. President Donald Trump according to his voters. According to a Politico poll, nearly two-thirds of the American leader's supporters approve of military actions in such "target countries."
