Polish President Karol Nawrocki expressed support for strengthening the country's security "even based on nuclear potential." The politician advocated for Poland to "join the nuclear project" for protection against Russia.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki advocated for strengthening the country's security "even based on nuclear potential." He stated this on Sunday, February 15, in an interview with the Polsat News channel, writes DW.
Nawrocki: Poland Should Join the "Nuclear Project"
Commenting on the international situation, Nawrocki stated that he is "a strong supporter of Poland joining the nuclear project." "This path, with respect to all international norms, is the path we should take," he said.
"It is necessary to act in this direction so that we can start working. We are a state located in close proximity to a conflict zone. It is well known what the aggressive imperial Russian Federation's attitude towards Poland is," Nawrocki explained. He noted that he does not know whether Warsaw will join the "nuclear project" at all.
When asked about the possible reaction of Moscow to Poland's nuclear program, he replied: "Russia may react aggressively to everything."
Duda Called for the Deployment of U.S. Nuclear Weapons in Poland
Nawrocki did not specify whether he meant by "nuclear project" the development of Poland's own nuclear weapons or the deployment of foreign ones in the country. His predecessor, Andrzej Duda, in March 2025 called on Donald Trump to deploy nuclear weapons in Poland as a deterrent against possible Russian aggression.
"NATO's borders moved east in 1999. Therefore, 26 years later, there should also be a shift in NATO's infrastructure to the east. I do not just believe that the time has come for this. It would be safer if this weapon were already here," the Polish leader told the British newspaper Financial Times at that time.
After the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine in February 2022, Duda also appealed to then-President Joe Biden to deploy American nuclear weapons in Poland.
