Trump's desire to acquire Greenland has not changed - Prime Minister of Denmark

The desire of U.S. President Donald Trump to gain control over Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has not weakened, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Saturday at a panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference, LETA reported citing DPA.

Although Greenland is no longer one of Trump's main topics of public rhetoric after the World Economic Forum in Davos, Frederiksen emphasized that the crisis is not over.

“it seems to me that the desire of the President of the United States remains the same. He takes this issue very seriously,” said the Prime Minister.

The moderator of the discussion asked Frederiksen if there is a price at which Denmark would be willing to sell Greenland to Trump.

“Of course not,” she replied. “Can you set a price for a part of Spain? Or a part of the USA?”

“We must protect sovereign states. We must protect the right of peoples to self-determination. And the people of Greenland have made it very clear - they do not want to become Americans,” emphasized Frederiksen.

The Prime Minister noted that she supports a more active NATO presence in Greenland to protect the Arctic region.

During a meeting in Davos, Switzerland last month, Trump withdrew his threats to use military force to acquire Greenland and also canceled planned tariffs on several European countries that strongly opposed his plans to seize the island.

The USA, Denmark, and Greenland have been negotiating the future of the island in various formats, including at the Munich Conference.
