In eastern Guinea, at least 11 people died as a result of a collapse at a gold mine, officials reported on Friday, LETA writes, citing AFP.

The Red Cross reported that on Wednesday, 10 women and one man died near the city of Kondianakoro.

The women were working at the mine when the collapse occurred, and their bodies were found several hours later. The man died on Thursday from injuries sustained in the collapse.

According to a local government representative, the deceased had gone to the mine to "wash and process mining waste," which is a common activity in artisanal gold mining.

The Red Cross stated that all the deceased are citizens of Guinea; however, the mayor of Kondianakoro, Bandju Hawa Keita, said that all 10 deceased women were from Burkina Faso.

Guinea is rich in minerals, including bauxite, iron ore, diamonds, and gold, but according to the World Food Programme, half of the country's population lives in poverty.
