The U.S. will allocate $9 billion to Armenia to help it abandon Russia's nuclear energy.

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance signed a cooperation agreement in the field of civil nuclear energy with the authorities of Armenia in Yerevan, Bloomberg reported on February 9, citing "Meduza."

The agreement allows American companies to export nuclear technologies, fuel, and services to Armenia. Additionally, U.S. companies will be able to participate in a tender to replace the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, which provides about 40% of the country's electricity, with small modular reactors.

Vance promised that Armenia would receive investments totaling $9 billion in two phases, the Armenian agency "Arka" reported. This will allow Armenia to abandon Russian nuclear energy, Bloomberg writes.

Before Vance's visit to Yerevan, Armenian representatives met with the leadership of "Rosatom." The Russian state corporation promised Armenia "comprehensive cooperation."

Armenia decided to cooperate more with the U.S. and the European Union after Russia effectively refused to support Yerevan in its conflict with Baku. In 2025, the Armenian parliament passed a law to begin the country's accession to the EU. At the same time, Armenia signed a Charter on Strategic Partnership with the U.S. In recent years, the authorities of Armenia have been repeatedly criticized in Russia.
