The chairman of the Lithuanian Saeima, Juozas Olekas, stated that the decision not to sign the letter calling for support for U.S. President Donald Trump's nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize this year was a regional one.
"Neither Estonia, nor Norway, nor Sweden (the heads of parliaments – BNS) signed. This is our regional approach," the speaker of the parliament stated to the BNS agency on Tuesday.
He said that, in his opinion, this is a key argument against supporting the letter.
On the other hand, the letter was signed by the speaker of the Latvian Saeima, Daiga Mierinsha.
Olekas received an invitation to sign the letter on January 22.
The initiative was put forward by the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Mike Johnson and the Speaker of the Knesset of Israel Amir Ohana. They called on leaders of parliaments around the world to nominate Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, noting his role in strengthening Israel's long-term security and laying the groundwork for peace in the Middle East.
Last week, this proposal was rejected by the speaker of the Polish parliament, Włodzimierz Czarzasty. In his opinion, Trump does not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize.
