They say one thing, do another”: Russia’s Foreign Ministry accuses the U.S. of breaking promises to Putin

The U.S. is now not ready to follow through on its proposals regarding Ukraine made during the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Anchorage, stated Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in an interview with TV BRICS.

According to Lavrov, the Trump administration "does not contest" the sanctions laws against Russia that were enacted by his predecessor Joe Biden. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that even under Trump, the U.S. imposed sanctions against "Lukoil" and "Rosneft," "and this was done in the fall, a couple of weeks after a very good meeting between Putin and Trump in Anchorage," as quoted by Meduza.

"So, it seems they tell us that we need to solve the Ukrainian problem. Well, in Anchorage, we accepted the proposal of the United States. That is, if we approach it man-to-man, they proposed, we agreed, the problem should be solved. <…> It doesn’t matter what they will say in Ukraine, in Europe, we can clearly see the cave-like Russophobia of the majority of regimes in the European Union, with rare exceptions. What mattered to us was the position of the United States. And since that’s the case, having accepted their proposals, we seem to have fulfilled the task of solving the Ukrainian issue and moving towards full-scale, broad, mutually beneficial cooperation," Lavrov noted.

"So far, in practice, everything looks the opposite: new sanctions are being imposed, a war against tankers is being waged, as you know, in open seas in violation of the Convention on the Law of the Sea. India and other partners are being pressured to refrain from purchasing cheap, accessible Russian energy resources," lamented the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Lavrov added that the U.S. "has declared the task of economic dominance." "Therefore, besides the fact that it seems they proposed something regarding Ukraine and we were ready, now they are not. In addition, we do not see any bright future in the economic sphere either," he said.

The meeting between Trump and Putin at Elmendorf-Richardson Air Force Base in Anchorage took place in August 2025. As a result, both leaders came out to the press and read their statements, but they did not answer journalists' questions. After this meeting, the phrase "spirit of Anchorage" appeared in the Kremlin's rhetoric — this refers to certain agreements reached by the presidents of the U.S. and Russia during the negotiations, but nothing is known about their essence.
