U.S. President Donald Trump signed a decree lifting the additional 25% tariffs on goods from India imposed due to the country's purchase of Russian oil. This was reported by Reuters.
The decree, which comes into effect on February 7, specifies that if the U.S. Department of Commerce finds that India has resumed direct or indirect exports of oil from Russia, the tariffs may be reinstated, as reported by "Meduza".
A trade agreement has also come into effect, under which India commits to purchasing American goods totaling $500 billion over five years — including oil, gas, coal, precious metals, airplanes, and high-tech products.
As part of this agreement, the base tariffs for India, which were in place regardless of Russian oil purchases, have been reduced from 25% to 18%. Thus, the new overall rate for Indian goods in the American market will be 18% instead of 50%.
Trump imposed additional tariffs against India due to its purchases of Russian oil in August 2025. By October, the U.S. president stated that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised him to stop the purchases — however, they continued.
Since the onset of the large-scale Russian-Ukrainian war, India has become one of the two main buyers of Russian oil, nearly matching China in purchase volumes. Trump did not impose additional tariffs on China for Russian oil.
