German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul rejected Russia's accusations of revanchism, which Moscow made in response to Berlin's support for Ukraine.
This was stated by Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Tuesday, February 3, during a meeting with his New Zealand counterpart Winston Peters in the city of Kerikeri, DW reports.
As the head of the German foreign ministry noted, such accusations are "a cheap attempt by Russia to divert attention." He emphasized that Germany "has no problems at all with critically reflecting on its own past."
In Germany, there is still gratitude towards the USSR and respect for the sacrifices of Soviet citizens. "We know that we were liberated from the Nazi regime, including at the cost of sacrifices in the Soviet Union, and these included sacrifices from Ukraine as well as other peoples of the Soviet Union," noted the head of the German foreign ministry.
In Germany, this historical truth is not questioned, he added.
The day before, the Russian foreign ministry accused the German authorities of being obsessed with revanchism for past defeats and attempting to forget the process of historical reconciliation between the peoples of Russia and Germany, while pointing to the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
Among other things, the Russian foreign ministry stated about the supply of German military equipment, weapons, and ammunition to Ukraine, which is again being used to fire upon Russian territory 80 years after the Great Patriotic War.
