Partial Suspension of Government Operations in the U.S.

On Saturday, U.S. government operations partially suspended as Congress failed to approve the budget for 2026 by the deadline — midnight on Friday, LETA reported citing AFP.

The shutdown is expected to be short-lived, and the House of Representatives is set to approve a Senate-agreed deal as early as next week.

Government operations were halted due to Senate Democrats' refusal to vote on a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security, amidst ongoing outrage over the deaths of two U.S. citizens — Rene Nicholas Goudas and Alex Preti, who were shot in Minneapolis during an immigration police raid.

The Democrats' refusal to vote on this bill prevented the lower chamber of the U.S. Congress from approving a comprehensive package of bills related to funding for other government agencies by the deadline — midnight on Friday.

The upper chamber of Congress approved a compromise version of the government funding bill on Friday.

However, the House of Representatives will only be able to vote on it on Monday, February 2. The Republicans hold a majority in the lower chamber, and the bill is likely to be approved.
