Riga, January 29, LETA. Uncertainty in the world is becoming a daily reality, and this poses a particularly significant challenge for small countries, said Defense Minister Andris Spruds on Thursday during a debate on foreign policy in the Saeima.
He noted that this is his third time participating in the debates as the head of the Ministry of Defense. "And it must be acknowledged that over these three years, the security situation in the world has become significantly more complex," said Spruds.
The minister pointed out that today it is increasingly difficult to define the fundamental principles and values on which states build their relationships. Changes create a sense of instability among people, including in Latvia.
He emphasized that Latvia must not only be confident in its own strength but also actively work to develop its capabilities together with allies in Europe and at the transatlantic level.
The head of the Ministry of Defense identified three areas where Latvia should work and take the lead: protecting international law, strengthening European unity and the EU's defense capabilities, and implementing strategic defense specialization, solidifying the country's position as a smart and effective player in the defense sector, particularly in the development of drone technologies.
"We defend and will defend an international system based on the rule of law, international norms, and human rights, which upholds sovereignty and territorial integrity," said the minister, emphasizing that this is why Latvia is helping Ukraine defend its freedom in the war against Russia.
The minister stressed that NATO remains the foundation of Latvia's collective security, and the United States is a strategic ally and partner.
Spruds noted that Latvia's defense tasks are clear - to steadfastly adhere to international law, to strengthen European and transatlantic security together with allies, and to continue developing defense capabilities and the drone industry in a way that strengthens Latvia's economy and the well-being of its residents.
