The First Death from the New Nipah Virus Recorded in India.

In India, the first death from the new Nipah virus has been recorded. There is currently no vaccine for the disease, which is transmitted in the same way as COVID-19.

The mortality rate is estimated to be between 40 and 75 percent, depending on the capacity for epidemiological surveillance and clinical management where the virus has emerged. The Nipah virus can be carried by both flying foxes (mostly from the family Pteropodidae) and pigs. Infection can occur through contaminated food or directly from person to person.

According to media reports, one patient in Kolkata fell into a coma and died. Currently, hundreds of people are under quarantine in the city, which became one of the most popular destinations for Russians in 2025.

According to the publication, there are currently about five thousand Russian citizens there.

Previously, scientists reported that Nipah is a deadly virus for which there is currently no vaccine or treatment. The World Health Organization considers it a high-risk pathogen.

According to experts, human infection with the virus is rare and usually occurs through transmission from bats, often via contaminated fruit.
