Moldovan authorities have begun the process of denouncing three agreements regarding the republic's membership in the CIS. According to Foreign Minister Popșoi, this concerns a legal exit from the union, while de facto membership has already been suspended earlier, DW reports.

Chisinau has begun the process of denouncing three foundational agreements that underpin Moldova's membership in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This was stated on Monday, January 19, by the country's Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi during a broadcast on Radio Moldova, emphasizing that after the termination of these agreements, officially and legally, "Moldova will no longer be part of the CIS," although de facto its membership has already been "suspended some time ago."

The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Moldova clarified that this concerns the CIS Charter, signed in Minsk on January 22, 1993; the Agreement on the Establishment of the CIS dated December 8, 1991, as well as the Appendix to this agreement dated December 22, 1991. According to Popșoi, the denunciation process is already underway, and parliament members will consider the relevant documents at the very beginning of the new parliamentary session.

"Probably by mid-February we will complete the procedures in the government, after which the decision will be made by parliament," the Moldovan state news agency Moldpress quotes the minister.

Mihai Popșoi called the termination of the agreements regarding Moldova's membership in the CIS "an important step in strengthening the country's European orientation."

The Moldovan Foreign Minister specified that the Republic of Moldova has signed a total of 283 agreements with the CIS; 71 of them have already been denounced, and about 60 are in the process of denunciation. At the same time, according to Popșoi, Chisinau does not intend to abandon agreements that bring economic benefits or have practical significance for citizens, as long as they do not contradict the country's European course.
