Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tihanovskaya, who currently resides in Vilnius, will move with her team from Lithuania to neighboring Poland, several people from her circle told AFP, LETA reports citing AFP.
In the near future, she will move to Warsaw with her team, four representatives of her staff and a source in the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs told AFP.
Her assistant Denis Kuchinsky told reporters that Tihanovskaya's husband, Sergey Tihanovsky, who was released from prison last year, is currently in the USA for security reasons.
This week, Tihanovskaya met in Warsaw with the President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki.
In October, Lithuania reduced the level of security for Tihanovskaya and her office. The home and office of the Belarusian opposition leader are still guarded; however, personal security is no longer provided within Lithuania and beyond.
This decision sparked widespread discussion. There was an opinion that it is politically motivated and is a concession to those who believe that Tihanovskaya is given excessive importance and that too many resources are spent on her security. Until now, Tihanovskaya's protection cost Lithuania about one million euros a year.
The security service began protecting Tihanovskaya in 2020 when she arrived in Lithuania after being forced to leave Belarus.
