Honorary Chairman of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis called Algirdas Paliackis, convicted of preparing for espionage in favor of Russia, a political prisoner.

He made this statement while commenting on the situation regarding possible opacity in the process of preparing amendments to the LRT law, procurement in the defense system, in which the company Fegda, associated with the social democrats, was involved.

"If it were up to me, I wouldn’t even propose the amendments to the Criminal Code for which Algirdas Paliackis is currently in prison. He is a political prisoner. He is absolutely not dangerous," Andriukaitis said in the Politika podcast.

Former politician and diplomat Paliackis was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for preparing for espionage in favor of Russia and is currently serving his sentence.

He was also convicted for denying the crimes of the Soviet Union by downplaying the significance of partisans.

In the last decade, Paliackis was convicted for denying Soviet aggression during the events of January 13, 1991, when he stated that on that day "our own shot at our own."

Paliackis worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, as an advisor to the Deputy Speaker of the Seimas, and as the Vice Mayor of Vilnius, and from 2004 to 2007 he served as a member of the Seimas.
