According to the AFU, the launch of ballistic missiles was carried out from the 'Kapustin Yar' range. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi stated that this is the first instance of such a strike on the city, DW reports. It was previously reported that the ballistic missile system 'Oreshnik' has been put on combat readiness in Belarus and is located 370 kilometers from Latvia.
The Armed Forces (AF) of Russia launched a "massive strike" on Ukraine, including the mobile ground-based medium-range missile system "Oreshnik." This was reported on Friday, January 9, in Telegram by the Russian Ministry of Defense. The statement from the ministry claims that this is in response to an attack by Ukrainian UAVs on the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Novgorod region, allegedly carried out on the night of December 29, 2025.
AFU: Launch - from the 'Kapustin Yar' range
Meanwhile, the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) noted that on January 8 at around 23:30, a missile threat was declared across Ukraine due to the risk of Moscow using ballistic missiles from the 'Kapustin Yar' range in the Astrakhan region. "Explosions have been recorded in the Lviv region," they emphasized.
Mayor: First instance of such a strike on Lviv
In turn, the mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi, wrote on Telegram that the missile "was moving on a ballistic trajectory at a speed of about 13,000 kilometers per hour." "This is an extremely high speed," the mayor noted.
"This is the first instance of such a strike on Lviv during the full-scale war. The city is located less than 70 kilometers from the border with the European Union. This is a clear signal to our international partners: Russia's war does not stop at any borders," Sadovyi emphasized.
The head of the Lviv regional military administration, Maksym Kozytskyi, wrote on Telegram that the strike was aimed at a critically important facility. According to local Telegram channels, the target of the attack could have been the Stryi gas field and a gas storage facility in the Lviv region.
Sadovyi clarified that as a result of the missile attack in the village of Rudno, part of the Lviv city community, the automatic gas safety system was activated - supply was temporarily halted for 376 subscribers. "This is not a network accident - the protection was triggered due to the shock wave," the mayor noted.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister: We call for a UN Security Council meeting
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X that Kyiv is initiating international actions - an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council, as well as retaliatory measures within the EU, the Council of Europe, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
"Such a strike near the EU and NATO border poses a serious threat to the security of the European continent and is a test for the transatlantic community. We demand decisive measures in response to Russia's reckless actions," Sybiha emphasized.
Strike with 'Oreshnik' on Dnipro
Prior to this, Russia used the 'Oreshnik' on the night of November 20 to 21, 2024, to strike Dnipro. Russian President Vladimir Putin then stated that the strike was carried out "with a ballistic missile equipped with non-nuclear hypersonic capabilities." According to the Russian leader, the range of the 'Oreshnik' is 1,000-5,500 kilometers.
