In Germany, fireworks are used to attack police officers, calls for expedited trials

After attacks on emergency service personnel in Germany on New Year's Eve, representatives of the CDU and the police union called for expedited judicial decisions in such cases.

After attacks on emergency service personnel in Germany on New Year's Eve, representatives of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which is part of the ruling coalition in Germany, as well as the police union, called for expedited judicial proceedings related to such incidents, the newspaper Bild reported on Thursday, January 1. According to CDU Secretary General Carsten Linnemann, sentences for those accused of such crimes should be handed down within a few days. This view is shared by the head of the Police Union of Germany, Andreas Roßkopf.

"In these cases, we expect swift judicial proceedings followed by penalties. This is what our colleagues, who risk their lives, expect. It is no longer just about banning fireworks, but about serious assaults on our rule of law," Roßkopf explained. According to him, the consideration of such cases often drags on for many months and ends with very lenient sentences. For example, by the end of November 2025, around 230 cases initiated after the previous New Year's celebration remained unresolved in Berlin.
