U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that a new class of heavily armed warships will be created, which will bear his name, LETA reports citing AFP.
Initially, two ships of the "Trump" class will be built, but their number may significantly increase, the president stated.
According to Trump, these will be "some of the deadliest surface warships" and "the largest warships in the history of our country."
Trump made this statement at his residence in Florida, "Mar-a-Lago," standing next to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Navy Secretary John Phelan. Images of the planned ships were displayed nearby on stands.
When asked whether the planned warships would be directed against China, Trump declined to specify, instead stating, "They will be directed against everyone, not just China. We have great relations with China."
Trump reported that the displacement of these ships will be between 30,000 and 40,000 tons, and they will be armed with missiles, guns, and weapons that are still under development, such as lasers and hypersonic missiles.
They will also be capable of carrying nuclear weapons in the form of sea-launched cruise missiles, Trump added.
Trump, who has previously criticized the appearance of American ships, stated that he will be involved in the design of the new warships along with the Navy, "because I am a very aesthetic person."
