As a result of the car hitting the bus stop in the western German city of Gießen on Monday, four people were injured, some of them seriously, the police reported, according to LETA citing DPA.
According to preliminary investigation data, the car was driven by a 32-year-old man from Azerbaijan living in Gießen.
Initially, the driver collided with two cars at a traffic light, after which he continued driving and crashed into a bus stop. He then drove further but later stopped and was apprehended by the police.
Authorities have launched a criminal investigation and are seeking photographs or video recordings made by witnesses that could clarify the sequence of events.
It is also being checked whether the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the police spokesperson reported.
"The exact circumstances of the incident are currently unknown and are under investigation," a police representative stated earlier.
The police declined to comment on whether investigators are treating the incident as an accident or a deliberate crash caused by the driver.
In the evening, music from a nearby Christmas market could be heard close to the scene of the incident, which was well-attended and continued to operate after the incident.
