In Finland, the villa of Russian billionaire Boris Rotenberg in Hanko has been seized due to tax debts, reports the public broadcasting company Yle, citing LETA referring to RFE/RL.
The legal representative of the entrepreneur stated that the issue regarding the villa is being 'considered' and the property will be returned.
This is not the first property of Rotenberg's that has been seized in Finland. Sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU) against Rotenberg prevent the entrepreneur from transferring funds to accounts in Finnish banks. Previously, a commercial property owned by the billionaire's company in the capital of the country was seized due to unpaid utility bills amounting to 27,000 euros.
Yle notes that Rotenberg's assets in Finland were confiscated back in 2022 after the sanctions were imposed; however, this procedure does not allow any actions to be taken with the property, and it effectively remains frozen.
The forced seizure of a debtor's property allows for the sale of real estate, with the proceeds directed towards debt repayment. Yle reports that the Debt Recovery Bureau has previously sold one of Rotenberg's commercial properties.
Boris Rotenberg moved to Finland in 1991 with his wife, who participated in the repatriation program. In 1998, he returned to St. Petersburg. In the early 2000s, Rotenberg obtained Finnish citizenship.
Earlier, media reported that he possibly obtained citizenship without police approval. According to information available to Yle, the granting of citizenship to Rotenberg was not approved by the counterintelligence department of the Security Service.
Boris Rotenberg and his brother Arkady are personally acquainted with the head of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin.
