Zelensky: Minsk did not want to transfer prisoners through EU countries.
Minsk did not want to transfer prisoners through European Union (EU) countries, so the Belarusian authorities turned to the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of Ukraine and its head Kyrylo Budanov. This was stated by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, as reported by the publication 'Nasha Niva' on its Telegram channel.
'Kyrylo Budanov reached out to me. He said that the Belarusians are ready to hand over political prisoners. They do not want to transfer them through one country or another in the EU, but if I support it, they are ready to transfer them through Ukraine,' Zelensky said.
On December 13, the Belarusian authorities announced an amnesty for 123 political prisoners convicted on charges of espionage, as well as terrorist and extremist activities. The decision was made against the backdrop of agreements with the United States regarding a possible easing of sanctions pressure on Minsk.
