Zelensky: Ukraine will refuse NATO if the U.S. provides security guarantees.
Ukraine is ready to abandon its demands for joining the North Atlantic Alliance if the U.S. and other Western countries offer "solid" security guarantees during the ongoing negotiations on the peace plan. This was stated by Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, as reported by The Financial Times (FT).
"We are talking about bilateral security guarantees between Ukraine and the U.S., namely guarantees similar to Article 5 [of the NATO Charter] (...), as well as security guarantees for us from our European partners and other countries, such as Canada, Japan, and others," the publication conveys.
Earlier, Russian leader's assistant for international affairs Yuri Ushakov stated that the dreams of the Ukrainian president about joining the military bloc are one million percent unlikely to come true.
Moreover, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that the understanding of the impossibility of Ukraine joining NATO was established a long time ago. At the same time, he mentioned that the Ukrainian leader demanded this from Washington, and "not in the most polite manner."
