In a conversation with Merz, Macron, and Starmer, there were 'sharp words,' Donald Trump told reporters. According to him, U.S. representatives were invited to a meeting in Europe, DW reports.
During a phone conversation between European allies of Ukraine and U.S. President Donald Trump, there was a verbal exchange, according to Trump. "We discussed Ukraine in rather sharp words," Trump told reporters on Wednesday, December 10, recounting his conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron.
"I think we had some minor disagreements about people. And we said - let’s see how this ends before we meet," the White House chief explained. Trump did not specify what he meant by "sharp words."
Trump Discussed Invitation for U.S. Representatives to Meeting in Europe
According to Trump, European leaders expressed a desire for U.S. representatives to participate in a meeting dedicated to Ukraine that will take place in Europe at the end of the week, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will be present. "We will make a decision based on what they come back with. We don’t want to waste time," emphasized the U.S. president.
He again urged Zelensky to announce elections in Ukraine and to conclude a peace agreement with Russia. "Zelensky should be realistic," stated Donald Trump.
In recent days, the White House chief has sharply criticized the Ukrainian president and called for him to hold presidential elections, which are currently impossible under Ukraine's existing military legislation.
After Trump's criticism, Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he is fundamentally ready for presidential elections, but two issues must be resolved for them to take place. The first is that the U.S. administration and European partners must ensure their security. The second is the legislative foundation for the legitimacy of the will of the people. According to Zelensky, he will ask the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada to prepare legislative proposals on the possibility of changing the legal framework and the election law during martial law.
