On Sunday, Swiss voters rejected the introduction of a new inheritance tax for the wealthiest residents of the country, which was intended to fund the fight against climate change, reports LETA citing DW.

According to the final results of the vote count in all 26 cantons, 78% of voters opposed the so-called initiative for the future, which proposed the introduction of a new climate tax on large inheritances.

The organization "Young Socialists" proposed a 50% tax on inheritances of at least 50 million Swiss francs (53.7 million euros). The youth movement called for these revenues to be directed towards funding "socially just measures to combat the climate crisis and the necessary restructuring of the economy."

In a second referendum, voters also overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to introduce mandatory civil service for all young people. 84.2% of Swiss citizens voted against this idea.

According to the proposal, every Swiss citizen, regardless of gender, would have to serve in the military or civil sector.

The Swiss government and parliament opposed both proposals, warning that they would lead to enormous costs and could jeopardize the country's economy.

Switzerland holds nationwide votes four times a year, giving citizens direct influence over policy-making.
