46% of Americans believe that a nuclear war involving the United States is likely in the next 10 years, while 37% think it will not happen. This is according to a new YouGov poll.

By party affiliation, 57% of Democrats and 37% of Republicans consider the likelihood of nuclear conflict to be high. Among independents, the figure is 44%.

About 44-46% of Americans are also worried that terrorists or criminals could use nuclear weapons on U.S. soil. Overall, 65% of citizens are concerned about the possibility of personally experiencing a nuclear war—77% among Democrats, 58% among Republicans, and 61% among independents. This is slightly lower than in 2022, when concern was at 69%.

The poll was conducted from October 30 to November 2, covering 1,148 respondents, with a margin of error of ±4 percentage points.

What Preceded This

The poll comes amid statements from Donald Trump about resuming nuclear tests in the U.S., which were halted in 1992. Defense Secretary Pete Gage said the administration is acting swiftly, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright clarified that the tests will be systematic or non-critical explosions.

Trump also signed orders to increase the country's nuclear energy output fourfold and criticized overly strict radiation safety standards.
