Finland is building a fence on its border with Russia, which will cost the budget nearly €2.5 billion. The Russian Foreign Ministry ironically commented on this news, advising Helsinki not to forget to build toilets in case of the victory of their 'worst phobias', as 'that is the only thing they will need'.

It will soon be exactly two years since the border was closed.

Finnish authorities have begun constructing the fence a few meters from the border with Russia, reports the Yle broadcasting company, citing the country's border service. In Lapland, the work is expected to be completed by December 9.

The fence is made of 3.5-meter dense chain-link mesh. Every 20 meters, masts with cameras and observation posts are planned to be installed, every 500 meters – service passages, and every 3 kilometers – animal passages.

The cost of constructing the fence for every 200 kilometers is approximately €362 million. The length of the border is 1,300 kilometers.

Finnish authorities began gradually closing the border in the fall of 2023, explaining their decision by the increasing flow of refugees from Somalia, Yemen, Syria, and other countries, who allegedly illegally enter the territory of the European Union.

In December, a car rally is scheduled to take place in Helsinki, organized by the Russian-speaking 'Alexandrov Society'. It is timed to the second anniversary of the complete indefinite closure of the border. The event aims to remind that people's rights to freedom of movement and family ties have been violated.
