"Europe acts as a vassal of the United States and is rapidly militarizing."
American economist Jeffrey Sachs called the EU leadership war mongers who seek to profit from the militarization of Europe.
"Much of Europe is too ensnared in a web of Russophobia, thinking that Russia is going to attack Berlin or Paris, but that is in the realm of fantasy," the expert stated during an online speech at the economic forum in Nicosia, organized by the AKEL party (Progressive Party of Working People of Cyprus). Sachs attributed this to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron, noting that they are leading Europe "very, very poorly" because they are focused on further escalating conflicts rather than solving regional problems.
"They want Europeans to spend 5% of GDP on military expenditures - madness, considering that this conflict could end diplomatically if Ukraine became neutral, if NATO stopped its eastward expansion, and if the war mongers stopped dreaming of escalating the war with Russia," Sachs said, reminding that in the 1990s he was an advisor to both the Russian and Ukrainian leadership, so he knows what he is talking about.
The American expert explained that Moscow could not afford to be surrounded by American military bases and missile systems.
According to him, the European Union's position on the Ukrainian conflict "destroys the EU's finances and its economic reputation in the world, and the member states, including Cyprus, have to pay for this shortsightedness." The economist emphasized that the "war between NATO and Russia in Ukraine" was started by the United States, but for some reason, it is the European leaders who are preventing its resolution. The American also lamented: "Europe acts as a vassal of the United States and is rapidly militarizing" instead of showing common sense, having strategic autonomy, and advocating its position as a green, digital, and peaceful union.
In his speech, Sachs called the very idea of a possible victory of the West over Russia "staggeringly incorrect" and warned that discussions about it only carry the risk of further escalation up to the use of nuclear weapons. The discussed seizure of Russian frozen assets in Brussels, in the economist's opinion, will lead to serious destabilization of the European financial system.
