Return to the Middle Ages: Switzerland Sent Trump Gifts to Lower Tariffs

Rolex watches and a personalized gold bar from the delegation of businessmen - this is how Switzerland achieved a reduction in tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump, Axios reports.

After unsuccessful negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the reduction of customs tariffs, Swiss authorities sent a delegation of industrial magnates to the White House with gifts for the American leader. Shortly after that, Washington agreed to make concessions, Axios reported on Friday, November 14.

The media noted the visit of the delegation of Swiss businessmen to the White House, which was reported on November 4. Among others, it included Marwan Shakarchi, head of the Swiss precious metals trader MKS PAMP SA, Jean-Frederic Dufour, head of the luxury watch manufacturer Rolex, and Johann Rupert, chairman of the board of directors of the luxury goods company Richemont.

It is known that the businessmen brought gifts for the U.S. President: from the head of MKS PAMP SA, Trump received a personalized gold bar worth just over $130,000, while Dufour gifted the American leader a gold desk clock. According to a source from Axios, gold was specifically mentioned as Trump's preferred gift - the head of Rolex initially wanted to bring rare titanium watches but was dissuaded from doing so.
