BBC Director General Tim Davie announced his resignation on Sunday in connection with the scandal caused by the editing of remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump, LETA reports citing AFP.

Following criticism of the 'Panorama' program for its distorted presentation of Trump's remarks, BBC News Editor Deborah Turness also resigned alongside Tim Davie.

"Like any public organization, the BBC is not perfect, and you must always be open, transparent, and accountable," Davie stated in a release published on the BBC website.

"While the current debates surrounding 'BBC News' are not the only reason, they have certainly influenced my decision (...). I must take full responsibility," he added.

A week ago, 'The Sunday Telegraph' published a leak of an internal memo that discussed the possible editing of Trump's remarks.

The Telegraph published excerpts from a BBC memo, which claims that the 'Panorama' program, aired in October last year, edited two parts of Trump's speech to create the impression that he was explicitly encouraging the Capitol riots in January 2021, DW reports. The White House accused the BBC of spreading "fake news."

Earlier on Sunday, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Lisa Nandy acknowledged that the accusations against the BBC are extremely serious.
