Due to strong winds off the coast of Tenerife, wave heights reached four meters. As a result, three people died and 15 were injured in several incidents at various beaches on the island. Authorities urge tourists to exercise caution and avoid entering dangerous areas.
This Saturday, Tenerife experienced one of its most tragic days related to coastal incidents. Due to strong waves at various beaches on the island, three people lost their lives, and another 15 were injured.
The most serious incident occurred at the promenade in Puerto de la Cruz, in northern Tenerife, where ten people were swept into the water from the breakwater.
Despite the efforts of rescuers and medical personnel who arrived at the scene, one woman died. Among the other injured, three sustained serious injuries, four had moderate injuries, and two had minor injuries; all were hospitalized in various medical facilities on the island.
Earlier that same day, at Roque de las Bodegas beach in Taganana, a giant wave swept six French tourists out to sea. Sources from the local police confirmed that the victims were taken into the sea when they ignored a warning sign posted in the area.
One woman sustained moderate injuries and was airlifted by a medical helicopter to the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital; four others required hospitalization, while the last of the injured received assistance at the scene.
At El Cabezo de Granadilla de Abona beach, in the south of the island, the lifeless body of a man was found floating in the sea. Rescuers and staff from the Canary Islands Rescue Service performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which yielded no positive results.
Later in the evening, the emergency and safety coordination center received a new report: a person fell into the sea in the Charco del Viento area in the municipality of La Guancha. A helicopter from the Canary Islands government retrieved the man from the water and evacuated him to the Santa Cruz de Tenerife dock helipad, where medical personnel, however, confirmed his death due to the severity of his injuries.
Since Friday, an alert has been declared in the Canary Islands due to coastal phenomena: wave heights may reach four meters, and wind strength may reach six points. Authorities warn that several incidents have occurred due to tourists ignoring warning signs posted in risk areas.
This storm at sea has highlighted the need for extreme caution in coastal areas during adverse weather conditions, especially in light of warnings issued by rescue services, the authorities stated.
