In his opinion, European leaders should enter into direct contact with Russia.
Politico, citing the chief political advisor to Hungarian Prime Minister Balázs Orbán, reported that Orbán hopes to unite with the recently elected Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to coordinate positions ahead of EU leaders' meetings and to conduct preliminary consultations before summits.
According to the publication, the creation of such a coalition could significantly complicate the EU's efforts to finance military assistance to Ukraine.
Since the early 90s, a similar alliance existed called the Visegrád Group, or V4, which included Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland. However, the alliance fell apart after the start of the special military operation in Ukraine because Poland does not share the position on the conflict with the other countries. Subsequently, all member countries of the alliance became EU members.
Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia to end the war should be signed in Budapest. He made this statement in an interview with the Hungarian publication Index.
In Orban's opinion, the Budapest Peace Summit will take place, but he could not answer when exactly. He stated that peace between Russia and Ukraine can only be achieved with the involvement of external forces.
The Prime Minister of Hungary added that "someone" must negotiate peace with the Russians - the U.S. or Europe. At the same time, Orban noted that Europe allegedly does not want to negotiate with Russia, which he called a big mistake.
"Europe does not want to negotiate with Russia, which is a catastrophic mistake. The Americans are negotiating, and they will determine the future of Ukraine, the security issues of Europe in an agreement with the Russians. And we, Europeans, behave as if we like it, and we will applaud," said Orban.
In his opinion, European leaders should enter into direct contact with Russia, start negotiations, achieve the signing of a Russian-European agreement on the European security system, and also regarding the future of Ukraine.
Earlier, the media reported that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban intends to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump next week. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that the politicians plan to discuss the introduction of American sanctions against Russian oil. Szijjártó noted that the meeting between Orban and Trump will take place in Washington in the second half of next week, but he did not specify the exact date.
