U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he has ordered the Pentagon to begin nuclear weapons testing on par with China and Russia, LETA reported citing AFP.
This happened just minutes before the start of the summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea.
The day before, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow successfully tested a nuclear-capable underwater drone with a nuclear engine, despite warnings from Washington.
"Due to the testing programs of other countries, I have ordered the Ministry of Defense to begin our nuclear tests on equal terms," Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social, directly mentioning Russia and China.
He also noted that the United States has more nuclear weapons than any other country and praised his efforts for the "complete modernization and upgrading of the existing arsenal."
According to him, in terms of the number of nuclear weapons, "Russia ranks second, and China a distant third, but in five years they will catch up [with the U.S.]."
Trump did not provide details about these tests, only stating that "the process will begin immediately."
The meeting between Trump and Xi in South Korea took place for the first time during Trump's second presidential term.
